Urszula and Agnieska Radwanska at the Orange Bowl
What is the name of the city that you were both born?
Urszula - I was born in Germany
Agnieszka - I was born in Krackow, Poland
How long were you in Germany?
Urszula - We lived there for about 6 years.
What part of Germany?
Urszula - Ahous.
Were your parents working there?
Urszula - Our father was playing in a tennis league.
How did you both get started?
Agnieszka - My father was a coach so we started in Germany. I was around five, so we both started together.
Was it at a tennis club in Germany?
Urszula - Yes, in Gronau. They were clay courts.
Agnieszka - It's a big club, I won my first tournament there. It was a tournament that was like, if someone makes a mistake you lost a point. I made only 3 mistakes and everybody had more, so I won. It was not like a match. I won this tournament and I was 5. It was my first trophy.
How many other players in the tournament?
Agnieszka - I don't know....about twenty. Everybody was older.
You are only separated by one year. How does this inspire you?
Urszula - Yes of course, if she won something, I wanted to be like her.
Agnieszka - If I won something, she wants to play in the future the same tournament.
You both are playing pro together in doubles?
Agnieszka - We try, with her ranking, yes if possible.
Urszula is limited in the number of pro events right?
Agnieszka - yes but her ranking is like 300 so the big tournaments are difficult to get in.
Urszula, at the Eddie Herr International, you told me you and your sister have different game styles. You said you have a more power game and Agnieszka has more finesse and uses her head in the matches.
Urszula - Yes but we are practicing together so our tennis is becoming more alike.
Yes I know your game compliments each other. Have you any other sisters or brothers at home?
Agnieszka - No, just the two of us ... that's enough.
When did you start playing tournaments Urszula?
Urszula - About seven years old in tournaments, under nine events in Germany.
Did you win anything in those days?
Agnieszka - I won! Under nine I won one in Czech Republic.
Urszula, - We played against one another in the Czech Republic. I was seven and Agnieszka was eight. We played one set.
Urszula, have you ever beaten Agnieszka, ever?
Urszula - No, sometimes in practice.
How are you going to feel playing against each other on the circuit?
Urszula - It will be fun, not like a match. We've been practicing with each other for twelve years. It will be more like a practice than a match.
Agnieszka, Tell me, who have you played on the pro tour so far?
Agnieszka - Elena Dementieva, Venus Williams, Anastasia Myskina, Anna Lena Groenefeld, Ana Ivanovic and Kim Clijsters.
How have you done against them? I know you've had some good wins.
Agnieszka - Yes I beat, Groenefeld, one time, I beat Dementieva, so it is one all. I beat also Myskina and I beat Williams.
Yes in Luxembourg, right?
Agnieszka - Yes, second round.
Urszula, do you travel to watch your sister?
Urszula - Some times
You're only a year apart so next you you may be in the same position as Agnieszka.
Urszula - I hope so.
I think it's wonderful and also unusual for an older sister to come watch juniors. Urszula gives you credit Agnieszka for her win at the Eddie Herr. You watched all her matches there.
Agnieszka - Yes, I played here last year. I know these events, so many courts, so I can practice also.
Did you bring someone to practice with.
Agnieszka - I have Urszula and my father. I also have my agent, Monsarella Jaboska, who was a player also, top 30. Also sometimes with other players.
It's nice that you plan it so you can be here with Urszula and practice at the same time.
Agnieszka - You can practice anywhere. In Prague it is winter so it is cold. Here it's wonderful weather. I'm practicing here for Australia. It the same weather and courts. In our city we haven't hard courts.
Urszula, what is going to make the decision on when you turn pro?
Urszula - Maybe next year. I will try to play more WTA tournaments.
Do you think you will go with the same agent as Agnieszka?
Urszula - Yes.
Agnieszka, what made you turn pro? Did you just get to the point where you said no more juniors?
Agnieszka - The French Open, I didn't have enough points to get into the main so I played juniors. It was then I said no more juniors. I had a good ranking in the WTA so I said enough juniors.
What is your WTA ranking now?
Agnieszka - 61. I dropped because I lost some points. Last year I was in two finals, one in a 25,000. I didn't play there this year so I did not defend my points. I lost about 20 points.
When is your next tournament?
Agnieszka - Hobart, Australia. Urszula will also try to get there.
Urszula, you are playing the junior Australian Open. There are the two grade ones and then the Open, are you playing them also?
Urszula - No, only the grade A because I am trying to get into the WTA's.
Your ranking went up this week in the ITF juniors.
Urszula - Yes, to 10th position.
She'll pass you soon Agnieszka!
Agnieszka - I'm 6th right now.
Urszula - I'll be getting more points here.
Thank you so much for talking to us and good luck to you in the future.
